Hypnosis and HypnotherapyHypnosis is a state of trance or full relaxation when the subject can be in contact with both the conscious and the subconscious minds. It is not a state of physiological sleep as may be mistakenly understood.
During hypnosis, changes or modification can be made to the hidden or concealed habits that a subject may have acquired or learnt during his/her life. It is important to realise that no such changes can be made without the approval of the subject's conscious mind i.e. the hypnotist cannot force any modification of old habits or ideas or inducing new ideas without the subject's approval.
Based on this approach, hypnosis has been used in clinical medicine and dentistry to manage and treat some illnesses where the mind plays a rather important role. Such conditions which are successfully treated are; irritable bowel syndrome, asthma, behavioural difficulties (including phobias, smoking and eating disorders).
In some other conditions where anxiety contributes to the illness such as hypertension, palpitations or migraine hypnosis was also found to help in the alleviation of the symptoms and or signs of some of the cases. Obviously in the latter cases the role of medications and investigations has to be considered as a priority.

There have been no serious side effects reported. The process will take 30-45 minutes after which the subject will be awakened and will be fully aware and refreshed.
